J Barrett & Company Supports The Open Door

J Barrett & Company is pleased to announce that the company has made a $3,750 donation to The Open Door in Gloucester.

Agents throughout the firm’s seven offices initially raised $1,875 but as it has in past years, J Barrett & Company matched the agents’ fund-raising efforts dollar-for-dollar.

“We are very proud to support such an amazing organization that helps our neighbors on the North Shore,” says Jon Gray, president. “The Open Door makes a significant impact on the issue of hunger that is, unfortunately, a reality today regardless of geographic location.”

“We appreciate the enthusiastic response our business has received over the past 11 years from clients throughout the North Shore. This is an opportunity for us—the agents and the company—to give back and to show our support for the entire community.”

“As our clients face the winter months with increased energy and cost of living expenses, we are grateful to J Barrett for stepping up to help fill the plates of North Shore families in need,” says Julie LaFontaine, executive director of The Open Door in Gloucester.

LaFontaine, who reports that annual requests for food assistance have more than doubled since 2008, attributes some of the increase to an additional category of people being served. “Our new reality is that we are serving people at the ‘poverty’ level and those in the ‘meal’ gap—that is, working people who are having trouble keeping food on the table,” she says.

While many people receive federal food assistance, a gap remains between those over the federal poverty line who do not qualify for federal food assistance based on their earnings and families with enough income to meet their food needs. Those in that gap—the meal gap—rely heavily on local food pantries.

Last year, The Open Door provided 1.5 million meals (1.8 million pounds of food) to 7,747 people through the Mobile Market and Food Pantry.
