Essex Historical Society and Shipbuilding Museum Presents: Dave Roper Slide Show and Talk “Learning The Ropes: Watching for Mermaids”Dave Roper, who lives in Marblehead, Mass. will present a slide show and read from his bestselling book Watching for Mermaids onTuesday, March 18 at 7:30 p.m. at the Waterline Center. His presentation “Learning the Ropes” will detail the many adventures, misadventures and lessons learned from a life lived on the water – whether working as a Mississippi River cruise ship captain or sailing to Maine, the Caribbean and our regional waters.
Roper grew up in a sailing family and in the late 1950s – as a boy anchored off the Isle of Haut in Penobscot Bay with his father- he rowed ashore on his own. There, he claims he saw two mermaids sunning on a rock. He told no one but this experience made him “different from most nine-year olds,” and after a youth of sailing on board his father’s 1938 Atkin cutter Phyllis, he set off on a 38 day solo sailing trip as a teenager, drove a launch, worked as a Mississippi River paddlewheel cruise ship captain, a Caribbean delivery boat skipper, and ultimately the owner of the sloop Elsa, which he has cruised extensively on alone and with his own family for many summers along the Maine coast.
Dave Roper’s memoir Watching for Mermaids published in 2012 by Points East Publishing, has been featured on the Boston Globe’s Bestseller list four times. This memoir will be the basis of the evening slideshow and Roper – a master storyteller – will literally take the viewer on the picturesque adventures with him.
“When you think about it, the only limits to all of us are our own life experiences and the scope of our imagination. What’s beyond that?” Roper says.
Don’t miss this wonderful evening! Tickets on sale at the door $8.00 Members, $10.00 non-Members.
